2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Review: The Underrated Family Compact
Hamza Khan·7 May 2026·10 min read
Honda's CR-V Hybrid is the UAE's most overlooked compact SUV. With 204 hp, best-in-class boot space and Honda's two-motor hybrid system, it delivers a blend of economy and practicality its Hyundai and Kia rivals cannot match.
Verdict
Pros: - 6.1 L/100 km real-world — best in compact SUV class - 589-litre boot — largest in segment - 975 mm rear legroom — exceptional for the size
Cons: - Exterior design is conservative - 204 hp feels adequate rather than energetic - Infotainment screen is smaller than direct rivals
Price range: AED 99,900 – 119,900 Best for: Families needing maximum boot space, high-mileage commuters Not for: Buyers who prioritise driving engagement or technology
Introduction
The CR-V Hybrid doesn't often make headlines in the UAE, where the Hyundai Tucson and Toyota RAV4 attract more attention. But after 10 days and 900 km of UAE driving, I can tell you the CR-V's case is compelling precisely because it focuses entirely on what families actually need from a compact SUV.
Key Specs
| Spec | CR-V 1.5T | CR-V Hybrid |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5T Petrol | 2.0L IMMD Hybrid |
| Power | 190 hp | 204 hp |
| Economy | 8.5 L/100 km | 6.3 L/100 km |

| Price | AED 99,900 | AED 109,900 |
Practicality
The CR-V's packaging is outstanding. The flat-floor rear allows three adults to sit abreast without hip contact — unusual in a compact SUV. Rear legroom at 975 mm is 36 mm more than the RAV4 and 70 mm more than the Tucson.
The 589-litre boot — largest in class — accommodates a pushchair plus a week's groceries simultaneously. The hands-free tailgate (standard on Touring trim) opens if you wave a foot under the bumper.
Driving Experience
Honda's i-MMD two-motor hybrid system operates differently from Toyota's approach. Instead of using the petrol engine to drive the wheels directly, Honda's system uses the petrol engine primarily as a generator, with the electric motors doing the primary driving work. The result is an exceptionally smooth power delivery — almost EV-like in character.
Over 900 km of UAE mixed driving, I averaged 6.1 L/100 km — better than Honda's claimed 6.3. At 20,000 km/year, that is a fuel saving of approximately AED 4,700/year vs the petrol CR-V.
Our Verdict
The CR-V Hybrid deserves more attention in UAE showrooms than it receives. Its combination of best-in-class boot space, remarkable real-world economy, and genuine rear seat space make it the most practically capable compact SUV available under AED 120,000. Buy it if utility and efficiency matter more than brand cachet.
