2026 Toyota Camry Hybrid Review: Still the UAE's Smartest Sedan

After 25 years in the UAE market, the Camry Hybrid remains the most sensible car you can buy. The 2026 update adds tech without breaking the formula. We test it in Dubai.

Verdict

Stars: 4.5 / 5 The Camry Hybrid is what most cars wish they were: genuinely excellent at its primary purpose, enormously reliable, and demonstrably cost-effective to own in the UAE. The 2026 update adds wireless CarPlay and a larger screen without fixing anything that wasn't broken.

Pros: - 5.9 L/100 km real-world — the most fuel-efficient non-EV sedan in UAE - Toyota reliability that needs no qualification - Excellent resale values — 68% after 5 years in UAE market

Cons: - Driving dynamics are deliberately dull - Interior materials are merely adequate - No AWD option in UAE

Price range: AED 94,900 – 119,900 Best for: High-mileage UAE commuters, taxi operators, anyone keeping a car 7+ years Not for: Driving enthusiasts or buyers who prioritise interior luxury

Introduction

I drove the 2026 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE for two weeks across Dubai and Abu Dhabi — a combined 1,400 km of mixed driving. My test fuel economy: 5.8 L/100 km — better than the official 5.9 figure. At AED 3.02/litre and 20,000 km/year, that is approximately AED 3,500 in annual fuel costs.

Design & Styling

The 2026 Camry retains the TNGA-F platform's wide, planted stance. The facelift adds a new front bumper with more angular LED daytime running lights and a black mesh grille surround on SE trim. It looks more purposeful than the outgoing model — less anonymous.

The XSE adds 19-inch two-tone alloys and a sportback-influenced rear end treatment that makes it look genuinely appealing — particularly in Midnight Black.

Interior Quality & Practicality

The SE's interior is functional rather than inspiring. The new 10.5-inch touchscreen (up from 9 inches) runs Toyota's latest software with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto — a long-overdue inclusion. Navigation is competent. Harman audio is unremarkable but acceptable.

Rear seat space is outstanding for a sedan — 910 mm of legroom places it ahead of the BMW 5 Series. Three adults fit in the rear without negotiation. The 428-litre boot swallows a full week's groceries.

Driving Experience

The Hybrid System

The 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine and rear-mounted electric motor form a system that has been optimised over 25 years of global production. In Dubai traffic, the Camry coasts on electricity between junctions constantly. The engine starts so smoothly that passengers without hybrid experience often do not notice the transition.

I drove 280 km between Abu Dhabi and Dubai — approximately 240 km highway, 40 km city. Final economy: 5.6 L/100 km. That is extraordinary for a full-size sedan.

Handling and Ride

The Camry's suspension is tuned for UAE road surfaces — compliant over speed humps, stable on motorway long-distance cruising, composed during emergency lane changes. It is not exciting to drive in the way a BMW 5 Series is. That is entirely deliberate and entirely correct for its buyers.

Wind noise at UAE motorway speeds (130 km/h) is low. Road noise from the 17-inch tyres is present but not intrusive.

Which Trim Should You Buy?

SE (AED 94,900): Wireless CarPlay, 10.5-inch screen, hybrid powertrain, safety suite. This is what 80% of UAE buyers should buy.

XSE (AED 119,900): Adds JBL audio, leather seats, heated/ventilated front seats, sporty styling. The leather and ventilated seats are worth the AED 25,000 in UAE summers.

Recommendation: SE for most buyers. XSE if you plan to keep the car 5+ years — the ventilated seats alone justify the premium for UAE conditions.

Running Costs

Insurance Group 12 — typically AED 3,200–4,500/year. Annual service: AED 900. Toyota GCC warranty: 5 years/unlimited kilometres. Predicted resale at 5 years: 68% of purchase price — the highest in class.

How It Compares

vs Honda Accord Hybrid (AED 109,900): The Accord is more engaging to drive. The Camry has better resale, Toyota dealer coverage and lower fuel consumption.

vs Hyundai Sonata (AED 89,900): The Sonata is better value at purchase. The Camry earns back the premium in resale within 3 years.

Our Verdict

The Camry Hybrid SE at AED 94,900 is the most sensible car purchase a UAE resident can make in 2026. If you drive 20,000 km/year, keep your cars for 7 years, and value reliability above all else, nothing else comes close at this price.

It is not exciting. It is not luxurious. It is also not going to strand you on the Abu Dhabi highway in August. For the UAE, that matters more.

Recommended: Camry Hybrid SE in Midnight Black Metallic.
