2026 Volvo XC90 B6 Review: Scandinavian Calm Meets UAE Practicality

The XC90's mild hybrid update adds to one of the most thoughtful luxury SUVs available in the UAE. At AED 289,000, the XC90 continues to reward considered buyers.

Verdict

Stars: 4.2 / 5 The XC90 remains the choice for UAE buyers who want a philosophy as much as a vehicle: understated design, authentic materials, genuine safety credentials and Scandinavian calm. It does not shout, does not intimidate, and does not try to be a German rival. That is precisely its point.

Pros: - Best safety ratings of any SUV in this segment - Genuinely sustainable interior materials (Nordico fabric or Nappa leather) - Google built-in delivers the best native navigation experience in any car

Cons: - B6 mild hybrid is not a true hybrid — fuel savings are minimal - 300 hp feels modest vs BMW X5 and Genesis GV80 - Polarising interior design may not suit all UAE buyers

Price range: AED 259,000 – 359,000 Best for: Safety-conscious buyers, those valuing design over power Not for: Performance-focused buyers or those wanting manufacturer-specific prestige

Introduction

The XC90 has existed through two generations and multiple refresh cycles in the UAE market. Its staying power comes not from being the most powerful or most technologically spectacular, but from being the most considered. I drove the XC90 B6 Ultimate Dark for 8 days across Dubai.

Interior Quality

The XC90's cabin is the most restrained luxury interior in this comparison — and the most beautiful for buyers who appreciate that restraint. The Orrefors crystal gear selector, genuine metal controls, ambient wood trims (from sustainably sourced forests), and the vertical-orientation 9-inch touchscreen powered by Google are a statement about what luxury means.

Google Built-In navigation — the native system, not CarPlay — delivers the best mapping experience of any car I have tested in the UAE. Real-time traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road, accurate building-level navigation in Dubai's complex newer districts, and voice control that understands natural language in Arabic and English are all functional.

Driving Experience

The B6's 2.0-litre 48V mild hybrid produces 300 hp. This is not exceptional for AED 289,000 — the Genesis GV80 2.5T produces 304 hp and costs AED 249,000 — but the XC90's Character represents power delivery: smooth, undemonstrative, always sufficient.

The Air Suspension (standard on B6 and above) provides the best UAE-road ride quality of any non-German premium SUV. Speed humps in Dubai Marina are absorbed with the confidence of air suspension from cars costing AED 100,000 more.

Rivals

Land Rover Discovery (AED 299,000): More off-road capable. Less refined interior. BMW X7 xDrive40i (AED 399,000): More powerful, more technology. AED 110,000 more.

Our Verdict

The XC90 B6 is for a specific UAE buyer: someone who has considered the BMW and Mercedes alternatives, found them somewhat theatrical, and wants a car that exists entirely on its own terms. If that sounds like you, the XC90 Ultimate Dark is the best luxury 7-seat SUV you can buy in the UAE.

For maximum value: the XC90 T8 PHEV qualifies for UAE EV registration waiver (AED 2,300/year saving) — a cost that narrows its AED 70,000 premium over the B6 significantly over a 5-year period.

Recommended: XC90 T8 PHEV for maximum financial sense; XC90 B6 Ultimate Dark for those who prefer petrol simplicity.
