UAE Vehicle Registration: Key Rule Changes for 2026 You Need to Know

The UAE has updated vehicle registration requirements for 2026, including new emission testing rules, updated inspection schedules and changes to the grace period for expired registrations.

What happened: The UAE Ministry of Interior and individual emirate traffic authorities have updated vehicle registration requirements effective January 2026. When: Effective January 1, 2026 for new registrations; phased for renewals from March 2026 Who it affects: All vehicle owners in UAE Key figures: Emission test threshold tightened; grace period for expired registration reduced from 30 to 14 days Source: UAE Ministry of Interior circular; RTA Dubai notice; Abu Dhabi DMT

The UAE has updated its vehicle registration framework for 2026, with changes affecting emission testing requirements, inspection schedules and the grace period for expired registrations. Here is a complete summary of what changed and what you need to do.

What We Know

Emission Testing — New Thresholds

The UAE has aligned its vehicle emission testing thresholds with Euro 6 standards from January 2026. Key changes:

  • Petrol vehicles manufactured before 2015 will now face enhanced emission testing during annual inspection
  • Diesel vehicles over 5 years old require additional particulate matter testing
  • Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are fully exempt from emission testing requirements (no change)

Vehicles that fail the new emission threshold will be required to undergo remedial repair before registration renewal can proceed.

Inspection Schedule Changes

Vehicle AgePrevious ScheduleNew Schedule (2026)
0–3 yearsEvery 2 yearsEvery 2 years (no change)
4–6 yearsAnnualAnnual (no change)
7–10 yearsAnnualTwice yearly
Over 10 yearsTwice yearlyTwice yearly + emission test

The key change is vehicles aged 7–10 years now require two inspections per year (up from annual). This primarily affects grey-market imports from Japan and other regions that are commonly 7–8 years old when imported.

Grace Period Reduced

The grace period for driving with an expired registration without fine has been reduced from 30 days to 14 days effective January 2026. After 14 days, the fine is AED 500 plus AED 50 per day.

An online renewal system via RTA Dubai or TAMM Abu Dhabi apps allows same-day digital processing with no physical visit required for most vehicles.

What This Means for Owners

Owners of older vehicles (7–10 years): Budget for two inspections per year. Each inspection costs approximately AED 120–150 at authorised testing centres.

Owners with expired registration: The 14-day grace period is now legally enforced. Set a calendar reminder. Online renewal takes less than 10 minutes via RTA/TAMM apps.

EV owners: No change in exemption status — continue to benefit from zero registration fees and simplified inspection process.

What Happens Next

The Ministry of Interior has announced plans to introduce a vehicle age limit for personal vehicles in certain zones — potentially restricting vehicles over 12 years from certain urban areas — by 2027. No final regulation has been published. CarsXT will report as confirmed details emerge.
