Geely Automobile was founded in 1986 in Taizhou, Zhejiang by Li Shufu — a man who famously declared that cars were just 'four wheels and two sofas'. From humble origins making refrigerators and motorcycles, Geely became China's first significant private automaker. The company's global ambition crystallised with the acquisition of Volvo Cars from Ford in 2010, a deal that shocked the industry.
