Subaru's automotive story began in 1953 when the Fuji Heavy Industries conglomerate — formed from the postwar breakup of aircraft manufacturer Nakajima — pooled its resources to build Japan's first domestically designed post-war passenger car. The name 'Subaru' means the Pleiades star cluster in Japanese, reflected in the brand's six-star logo. Subaru pioneered the combination of all-wheel drive with horizontally opposed 'boxer' engines in passenger cars, creating a uniquely capable and distinctive drivetrain. The brand's rally pedigree with its Impreza WRC gave Subaru a global motorsport identity.
