Jeep was born from a wartime contract — the US Army needed a lightweight reconnaissance vehicle in 1940 and Willys-Overland delivered the MB, which soldiers nicknamed the Jeep. The vehicle's rugged all-terrain capability became legendary during World War II across every theatre of combat. Civilian Jeep production began in 1945, introducing the world's first recreational off-roader. The seven-slot grille — representing the seven continents Jeep conquered — became one of the most protected trademarks in automotive history.
