Lincoln was founded in 1917 by Henry Leland — the same engineer who founded Cadillac — named after Abraham Lincoln, the first president Leland ever voted for. Ford Motor Company acquired Lincoln in 1922 after Leland ran into post-war financial difficulties. Lincoln became Ford's prestige brand, producing legendary models including the Continental — famously the car of choice for US presidents. The Continental's long-hood, short-deck proportions defined American luxury motoring for generations.
