SsangYong Motor was founded in 1954 in Seoul, South Korea — its name means 'double dragon' in Korean. The company built a strong reputation manufacturing four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles, many based on Mercedes-Benz technology acquired through a 1991 partnership. Despite financial turbulence and multiple ownership changes including Daewoo, SAIC and Mahindra, SsangYong survived as South Korea's specialist off-road manufacturer. The brand was acquired by KG Mobility Group in 2023, which is now rebranding and relaunching the lineup.
