Opel was founded by Adam Opel in 1862 in Rüsselsheim, Germany, initially manufacturing sewing machines before pivoting to bicycles and then automobiles in 1899. General Motors acquired Opel in 1929, and the brand became GM's primary European vehicle platform for over 80 years. Opel has a long motorsport heritage and produced some of Germany's most beloved affordable cars, including the Manta and Kadett. After GM sold Opel to PSA Groupe in 2017, the brand is now part of the Stellantis family.
