Michio Suzuki founded the Suzuki Loom Works in Hamamatsu, Japan in 1909 to manufacture silk weaving looms. After World War II, Suzuki pivoted to motorised vehicles, launching its first motorcycle in 1952 and first car — the tiny Suzulight — in 1955. Suzuki carved out a unique global niche in compact cars and motorcycles, becoming the dominant car brand in India through its Maruti joint venture. Suzuki's small car expertise made it the vehicle of choice for millions of first-time car buyers across the developing world.
