VinFast was founded in 2017 by VinGroup, Vietnam's largest conglomerate, with the audacious ambition of creating Vietnam's first homegrown automotive brand. The factory in Haiphong was built from scratch in just 21 months — an extraordinary pace that required recruiting engineers from BMW, Pininfarina and other global leaders. VinFast initially launched petrol models before pivoting entirely to electric vehicles in 2022, becoming an EV-only brand. The company's listing on NASDAQ in 2023 briefly made it the world's third most valuable automaker.
