Volkswagen — literally 'people's car' — was conceived in 1930s Germany to give ordinary citizens affordable, reliable personal transport. Ferdinand Porsche designed the original Beetle, and the factory was built in what is now Wolfsburg in 1938. After World War II, British occupation forces helped restart production, and the Beetle grew to become the best-selling car in history. Today Volkswagen Group is the world's largest automotive conglomerate, overseeing brands from Skoda to Lamborghini and Porsche.
