2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9 Launch: 7-Seat EV from AED 249,000 Is Here

Hyundai's largest EV arrives in UAE showrooms. The IONIQ 9 combines a spacious 7-seat cabin, 800V ultra-fast charging and a 480 km real-world range — at a price that challenges petrol family SUVs.

The IONIQ 9 has arrived — and with it, the first genuinely compelling case for buying an electric 3-row family SUV in the UAE at a price that competes with mainstream petrol alternatives.

At AED 249,000, the IONIQ 9 Standard Range positions itself directly against the petrol Toyota Highlander Hybrid (AED 169,000) and the Kia Telluride (AED 175,000). The premium is real — but so is the running cost advantage.

Quick-Take Overview

On sale: Deliveries from March 2026 Starting price: AED 249,000 (Standard RWD) Key rivals: Kia EV9, Toyota Highlander, Kia Telluride Powertrain: 110.3 kWh battery, RWD or AWD Standout spec: 970 mm third-row legroom — genuinely adult-usable

Design & Exterior

The IONIQ 9's exterior is unmistakably Hyundai's "Art of Steel" design language — a rounded, flowing form with a smooth hood and a distinct parametric pixel LED front. The silhouette is longer (5,060 mm) and more aerodynamic than conventional 3-row SUVs.

The flush door handles (all four doors), the panoramic roof that covers all three rows and the integrated rear spoiler all contribute to the 0.263 Cd drag coefficient — the lowest of any 3-row SUV available in the UAE.

Available colours at UAE launch: Abyss Black, White Matte, Gravity Blue and new Celadon Green.

Interior & Technology

The IONIQ 9's interior is its defining advantage. The Universal Island centre console — which slides forward and backward on a rail — adapts the cabin from a family transport to a first-class lounge configuration. In Lounge mode, both front seats recline and the console slides rearward.

The 12.3-inch display cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment screen are combined in a curved single-piece design. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. A 14.4-inch rear entertainment display serves rows 2 and 3.

Third-row legroom: 970 mm — the benchmark figure. At this measurement, the IONIQ 9 offers more adult rear space than the Nissan Patrol Y63 (930 mm).

Powertrain & Performance

800V fast charging: 10–80% in 24 minutes at 350 kW. DEWA's 150 kW stations: approximately 35 minutes for 10–80%.

Pricing & Trim Guide

UAE launches with two trims in the Standard and Long Range variants:

TrimFeaturesPrice (AED)
Standard RWD7 seats, standard spec249,000
Long Range AWD7 seats, AWD, enhanced audio289,000
Recommendation: Long Range AWD for UAE buyers who regularly travel between emirates. The AED 40,000 premium buys AWD, more power and longer range — all relevant for the Dubai–Abu Dhabi and Dubai–Al Ain corridors.

Verdict

The IONIQ 9 is Hyundai's most important UAE product. It makes the financial case for electric 3-row family SUV ownership in the UAE — running costs at AED 0/year (DEWA free charging) vs AED 11,800/year for a petrol Telluride substantially close the purchase price gap over 5 years.

The 970 mm third-row legroom solves the space problem that has prevented 3-row EVs from being a genuine family purchase. This is a landmark product.

Recommended: IONIQ 9 Long Range AWD in Abyss Black.
