2026 BMW X5 xDrive50e Review: The Plug-In Hybrid That Suits UAE Life

The X5 xDrive50e offers 88 km of electric-only range — enough for a full day in Dubai without using a drop of petrol. We run it through the UAE summer.

Verdict

Stars: 4.3 / 5 The X5 xDrive50e is the most sensible PHEV for UAE buyers: 88 km of electric range covers the average Dubai daily commute on electricity alone, DEWA free charging makes running costs negligible, and the 400 hp petrol-electric system means performance is never compromised.

Pros: - 88 km EV range covers most daily UAE commutes - 400 hp when both powertrains combine - BMW's best interior quality in years

Cons: - AED 389,000 is a lot for a mid-size SUV - Boot reduced to 500 litres vs 650 for standard X5 - Third-row not available on xDrive50e

Price from: AED 389,000 Best for: Dubai commuters with home charging capability Not for: Families needing 7 seats or UAE buyers without home parking

Introduction

I drove the X5 xDrive50e for two weeks across Dubai — commuting from Jumeirah Beach Residence to Business Bay, school runs, weekend trips to Abu Dhabi, and one charging session at a DEWA fast charger on Sheikh Zayed Road. The conclusion: for a specific type of UAE buyer — city-based, home-charger equipped, higher mileage — this is the most intelligent SUV purchase available.

Design & Styling

BMW's 2026 X5 carries the mild exterior changes from last year's update: revised LED units front and rear, a slightly wider kidney grille (it is still controlled — not as theatrical as the iX), and a new Sophisto Grey metallic option. It is a handsome, restrained design that avoids the controversy BMW styling has attracted elsewhere.

The M Sport package — standard on xDrive50e — adds 22-inch M alloys, air suspension, and the Shadowline trim package. On black paint, this version looks properly aggressive.

Interior Quality & Practicality

The 2026 X5 interior is BMW at its most coherent. The Curved Display combines a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen in one seamless arc. iDrive 8.5 is responsive and logical — the best OEM system available today, ahead of Mercedes MBUX and far ahead of Toyota's offerings.

Leather quality on the Cognac Vernasca option is exceptional. The panoramic sunroof floods the cabin with light — important in UAE winters when you actually want that. The M Sport seats hold you firmly but are comfortable on the Abu Dhabi motorway.

Boot space at 500 litres is 150 litres less than a standard X5 (due to the battery pack under the floor). For most UAE buyers this is not a problem. Families carrying full camping gear for Hatta will notice the difference.

Infotainment & Technology

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, BMW's own navigation (which is excellent on UAE roads), and a Harman Kardon surround sound system are all standard on xDrive50e.

The eDrive zone technology automatically switches to electric mode in pre-set zones — you can map DEWA stations or your home for automatic EV engagement. On the road, Sport mode holds the petrol engine on for maximum performance; eDrive mode depletes the battery first.

Driver assistance: Active Cruise Control with stop-and-go, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Side Collision Avoidance — all functioned flawlessly during UAE highway testing.

Driving Experience

On Electricity Alone

Charged overnight from a standard UAE 32A home charger, the X5 starts every morning on full electric. My commute from JBR to Business Bay — 27 km each way — was completed entirely on electricity for the full two weeks. I used zero petrol on weekdays.

The electric motor's 340 Nm of immediate torque makes the X5 feel urgent in traffic. Merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road from the Safa Park slip road — normally the kind of move that requires commitment — is effortless.

Combined Mode

On the Abu Dhabi weekend trip (with battery already depleted from the outward journey), the 3.0L inline-six takes over seamlessly. There is no hesitation, no mode-switching lag — just continuous power. I averaged 8.7 L/100 km over the 370 km Abu Dhabi round trip with a depleted battery.

Ride and Handling

The air suspension (standard on xDrive50e) transforms the X5's ride quality. At Comfort setting, it absorbs the tar strips on the E11 beautifully. In Sport, body roll is well-controlled — the X5 changes direction confidently for a 2,350 kg SUV.

Which Trim Should You Buy?

There is only one xDrive50e trim in the UAE, priced at AED 389,000. Options to consider:

  • Executive Package (AED 18,900): Adds massaging front seats, Head-Up Display, four-zone climate control. Worth it for the HUD alone on UAE motorways.
  • Sky Lounge panoramic sunroof (AED 7,400): Yes. UAE winters are perfect for this.
  • M Sport Pro (AED 22,000): Carbon exterior trim and 22-inch wheels. Aesthetic choice only.

Running Costs

DEWA free charging until end of 2026 means weekly running costs for city-only driving approach zero on the energy side. Petrol for weekend trips at 8–9 L/100 km is the main fuel cost.

BMW's 5-year service inclusive package costs AED 8,900 and covers all scheduled maintenance. Insurance at Group 20 PHEV: AED 6,500–8,000/year.

How It Compares

vs Mercedes GLE 350de PHEV (AED 365,000): Mercedes offers more boot space and a wider model range but lower EV-only range (60 km vs 88 km). The X5 wins on EV capability.

vs [Land Rover Range Rover Sport](/ae/cars/land-rover-range-rover-sport-2026) PHEV (AED 435,000): More capable off-road but AED 46,000 more expensive. The X5 is the better daily driver.

Our Verdict

The X5 xDrive50e is the most practically intelligent premium SUV purchase for a Dubai commuter. The combination of free DEWA charging, 88 km daily EV range and a genuinely excellent petrol-electric powertrain makes every journey feel like it costs almost nothing.

The price is high, the boot is smaller than a standard X5, and you need home parking with charging to unlock the full benefit. If you have those conditions, this is the best large SUV on the market for UAE city life.

Recommended: xDrive50e in Carbon Black with Executive Package and Sky Lounge sunroof.
