2026 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Review: Desert King, Highway Luxury
Oliver Bennett·5 May 2026·13 min read
After 1,800 km across UAE highways, city traffic and the Liwa dunes, we give the 2026 Land Cruiser 300 our most thorough UAE review yet.
Verdict
Pros: - Best off-road electronics in the segment - Exceptional long-term reliability - Refined twin-turbo V6
Cons: - Expensive vs American rivals - Third-row space is inadequate for adults - Fuel economy could be better
Price range: AED 273,000 – 430,000 Best for: UAE families who camp, off-road and need one car to do everything Not for: Those who rarely leave tarmac — buy a Lexus LX instead
Introduction
I have been driving Land Cruisers in the UAE for eight years, and the 300 Series — introduced in 2021 and refreshed for 2026 — is the best one yet. Over four days, I put 1,800 km on a GXR test car: Abu Dhabi to Al Ain on the E22, a dune drive at Liwa, the daily Dubai grind on the E311, and a weekend run to Hatta. This is what I found.

Design & Styling
The 300 Series exterior has aged well. The boxy, purposeful profile is unmistakably Land Cruiser — it has not followed the trend toward sloping rooflines and complex surfaces. I appreciate this. On a car that may spend weekends in the dunes, function should precede form.
The 2026 refresh adds a revised front grille with darker mesh, repositioned LED daytime running lights and a new matte grey finish option that suits the car's character perfectly. On the road, it draws respectful looks rather than attention-seeking ones.
The GXR's 18-inch dark alloys are my choice — the VXR's 20-inch units look better but add unnecessary unsprung weight for off-road use.
Interior Quality & Practicality
Cabin Quality
The GXR interior is legitimately impressive. Semi-aniline leather on the front seats, genuine aluminium trim inserts, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen that responds instantly. The three-zone climate control keeps the cabin genuinely cool during Dubai summers — a non-negotiable for UAE buyers.
The Mark Levinson 14-speaker audio in the GXR is excellent on highway cruising. Ventilated front seats are standard and essential.
Practicality
The front two rows are outstanding. The third row is the weak point — 870 mm of headroom and 660 mm of legroom means adults sit with knees near their chins. If you regularly carry 7 adults, the Patrol or Chevrolet Tahoe is a better choice. The Land Cruiser's third row is best treated as a child seat or occasional use.
Boot space with the third row folded is 1,165 litres — enough for a family's camping gear.
Infotainment & Technology
Toyota's 2026 software revision is a genuine improvement. The touchscreen now supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto natively. The navigation is slower than Google Maps but the Multi-Terrain Monitor integration with the off-road system is unique and genuinely useful.
Driver assistance suite includes: Adaptive Cruise Control with stop-and-go, Lane Departure Alert, Pre-Collision System with pedestrian detection, and a Panoramic View Monitor. All worked reliably during highway testing.
Driving Experience
On the Highway
At 130 km/h on the Abu Dhabi–Al Ain road, the Land Cruiser feels settled and composed. The twin-turbo V6 produces 383 Nm from 1,600 rpm — overtakes happen smoothly without needing to drop more than one gear. Wind noise is well-suppressed; road noise from the 18-inch all-terrain-rated tyres is the only acoustic intrusion.
I averaged 14.3 L/100 km over 800 km of highway-dominated driving — better than the official 13.5 figure suggests.
In the City
The Land Cruiser is large — 4,985 mm long — and you know it in multi-storey car parks. The 360-degree camera and automatic parallel parking system help, but this is not a car for Dubai Marina's narrow streets.
In the Dunes
This is where the 300 Series earns its reputation. Multi-Terrain Select offers dedicated modes for Sand, Mud & Snow, Rock and Loose Rock. In Sand mode, traction control maps change, throttle response smoothens and the AWD system splits torque toward the rear wheels intelligently.
I climbed a 40-degree sand face at Liwa with Crawl Control engaged at speed 3. The car managed its own throttle and brake inputs — I only needed to steer. At the crest, it transitioned smoothly rather than lurching. This is the system that makes the Land Cruiser the benchmark for UAE buyers.
Refinement
The twin-turbo V6 is whisper-quiet at idle and composed under load. The replacement of the old 4.6L V8 concerned many buyers — the new engine is more efficient, equally torquey at low revs, but lacks the V8's character. After 1,800 km I no longer miss it.
Which Trim Should You Buy?
GX (AED 273,000): Lacks ventilated seats and Multi-Terrain Monitor. Hard to justify the saving.
GXR (AED 345,000): The one to buy. Full off-road electronics, Mark Levinson audio, ventilated seats, panoramic sunroof. Best value in the range.
VXR (AED 430,000): Adds head-up display, massaging front seats, 20-inch wheels. The AED 85,000 premium is hard to justify over a GXR.
Running Costs & Reliability
Toyota's GCC warranty covers 5 years/unlimited kilometres, with a 10-year hybrid battery warranty on HEV models. Service intervals are 10,000 km or 12 months.
Annual service for a Land Cruiser GXR runs to AED 1,800–2,400. Insurance in Group 22 typically costs AED 6,000–8,500/year depending on the insurer.
Predicted 5-year resale: 68% of purchase price — among the highest in any segment.
How It Compares
vs [Nissan Patrol](/ae/cars/nissan-patrol-2026) Y63 (AED 349,000): The Patrol has more power (400 hp vs 271 hp) and a larger third row. The Land Cruiser has superior off-road electronics and better resale. Full comparison in our Land Cruiser vs Patrol head-to-head review.
vs Lexus LX 600 (AED 395,000): The LX shares the same platform and is more luxurious inside. Opt for the LX if you prioritise interior refinement; the Land Cruiser if you want more off-road capability per dirham.
vs Chevrolet Tahoe (AED 249,000): The Tahoe is far cheaper and genuinely large. It is not a serious off-road vehicle. Buy it if you never leave tarmac.
Our Verdict
The 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser GXR is the easiest recommendation I make as a UAE automotive journalist. No other car does what it does — credible dune capability, daily-driver refinement, 7-seat practicality and Toyota's reliability — in one package.
The VXR pushes the price into territory where the Lexus LX becomes a more rational conversation. But the GXR at AED 345,000 is the sweet spot: capable enough for serious desert use, refined enough for a business trip to Abu Dhabi.
Recommended: Land Cruiser GXR, Lunar White, with Terrain Management upgrade.
